The Hagia Sophia is one of those places you have to see when you're in Istanbul. And yes, it’s impressive, massive, historical and beautiful.
Here’s what I wish I had known before going:
You can’t walk around freely. The entire ground floor is only accessible for prayer, which means you need to stay behind ropes, looking at the hanging lamps and tiled floors from a distance. Beautiful, but not immersive.
You can go upstairs, but again, don’t expect toooo much. You’re not allowed to touch the walls, and the views are quite far-off. Still, if you like mosaics and imagining what once was, it’s worth to go.
Tip: buy your ticket online in advance to avoid the massive queues. And make sure to bring something to cover your shoulders (and hair, if you're a woman). This should be a scarf, a sweater to cover your hair is not allowed.
Is it the highlight of Istanbul? Maybe not. But it’s one of those places that you have to see yourself, right?
