Right across from the Hagia Sophia stands another icon: the Blue Mosque. Built to rival its legendary neighbour, and you can feel that ambition in its symmetry and size.
But truth be told? Inside, it’s a bit less overwhelming. The central dome is huge (over 23 meters wide!), but the space feels more restrained, less dramatic than the Hagia Sophia. Still, it has its own kind of beauty hidden in the details.
We visited first around midday, when it was very crowded and chaotic. But we came back at sunset, and the vibe had completely changed. Fewer people, softer light, and suddenly the mosque felt like the peaceful heart of the city.
