Time for a safari at the famous Yala National Park

In the southern corner of Sri Lanka lies Yala National Park, known for its leopard population. The safari park is the best known of the country and is highly visited from different places on the South Coast. We chose Tissamaharama as our base, a charming town located in close proximity to Yala National Park. Tissamaharama offers a tranquil setting and serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the diverse wildlife and captivating landscapes that define the region.

Visit Yala National Parc

This park has five different ecosystems which promises a very diverse safari with a lot of wildlife like peacocks, water buffalos, crocodiles, deer, monkeys, mongooses, elephants and it has the highest population of leopards. You can choose to do a half or a full day safari. Both mornings and afternoons have their benefits. From what we’ve heard the biggest chance to see leopards is when it rains because that’s a sign for them to move.

Take your tuktuk for a drive to an amazing scenery.

Watch the fruitbats’ sky spectacle

Every evening at sunset hundreds or even thousands of fruit bats fly out of the two trees located at the lake. It’s a spectacle to see and hear them and it’s not touristic at all. We were the only ones there, which made it even more special. The location on Google Maps is called: ‘Fruit Bats View Point’. It’s easiest accessible with your own transport but you could also walk from the lakeside.
