Before heading to the hike, we stopped in the village of Santana. Here you can visit the old typical houses of Madeira. However, we didn't really find this worthwhile. It didn't feel authentic at all, due to its location (next to a main road) and imitated architecture.
Hike PR9 - Levada do Caldeirão Verde
This hike again takes you along the Levadas and brings you to the highest waterfall on the island. During the hike you have to go through 4 tunnels so don't forget your flashlight! A walk of 13 kilometers, but mostly flat, makes it an accessible walk for everyone. Nature is again very beautiful, with lots of vegetation and flowers. Next to the parking lot is a cafe where you can enjoy a delicious piece of cake, definitely deserved at the end of the hike! This hike was a popular one, especially if you compare it to PR6, which is somewhat similar in a way because it also takes you past levadas and waterfalls. We preferred PR6 over PR9, but both are very beautiful! We started both hikes in the early afternoon.
