Options: Somo vs Playa Virgen del Mar
Day 3 in Santander and there is still much to do! There are still many beaches to discover, plus we got some tips from the locals!
Somo
On your last day, you actually have a lot of options! We are secretly planning to come back in the spring or late summer, to also experience the surf vibe of the city. A tip we got from the locals themselves (oh yes, it's handy if you know a bit of Spanish while bar hopping ;-)) is to take the ferry to Somo and visit the other side of the bay. This offers a different view of the coastline and gives you the opportunity to discover new places. Sunbathing among the locals? Apparently, it's also possible at Somo, on Playa de Somo. Another tip from the locals for Somo is a visit to Peña Cabarga. For this, you will need a car. A café/restaurant with a panoramic view over Santander. Just be aware, the restaurant is only open until 5 PM.
Playa Virgen del Mar
However, we opted for a slightly more active activity! We went to explore the rugged cliffs of the region. We jumped in the car and drove to Playa Virgen del Mar. There is also an extensive bus network, so you can also reach locations outside the city. Here too, we once again experienced the friendly atmosphere and all the dog owners are present to enjoy the peace and nature.
Our summary!
Santander was completely new to both of us. To be honest, we initially didn't have very high expectations of the city. Maybe that was the secret ingredient of our successful trip? We both fell a little in love with the cozy and atmospheric Santander, located by the water with a beautiful view of the mountains. Outside the mountains, it sometimes reminded us of our hometown Antwerp! We ended our trip with sunset drinks at Paseo Maritimo de Santander! We couldn't get enough of these views!
