Waking up with the hills of Terhills

Starting the day before the rest of the world does? Hell yes. At 5:30 AM, I parked my car right next to the main gate of Terhills, part of the Hoge Kempen National Park. Still a bit sleepy, but curious — and ready for some fresh air. The three of us followed the green route (4 km), which climbs all the way to the top of the panoramaterril. It’s a bit of a workout that early in the morning, but wow, the view is 100% worth it. They call it the most beautiful panorama in Flanders for a reason: layers of forest, the morning light over the water, and those iconic mining hills that have been completely reclaimed by nature. At exactly 6:00 AM, the sun peeked over the horizon, not a soul around. With the brand new floating cycling and walking bridge now open, the view has only gotten better. If you’re feeling extra adventurous (and awake), go for the red route (9.6 km). It takes you past even more terrils, across the floating bridge, and rewards you with a phenomenal 360° view. Some mornings are just worth waking up early for.
