Our guide took us to visit a random family living in the heart of The Gambia, near a border road with Senegal. He explained that he always chooses a family spontaneously, after asking their permission, to give tourists a genuine insight into rural Gambian life. The family was incredibly warm and welcoming, proud to show us their home, garden, and animals. They shared how they keep their houses cool despite the heat, the rhythm of their daily lives, and how they grow and harvest their vegetables. 🐎🌱
The compound consisted of several traditional huts. The father had his own hut, while the mothers slept with the children in shared spaces. There was also a separate kitchen hut, cleverly insulated with thick leaves to protect it from cooking smoke. During our tour, the children looked up at us with wide, curious eyes and eagerly grabbed our hands to lead us through their homes. It was a touching experience, full of smiles and authentic connection.
When it was time to leave, we were given warm hugs and heartfelt thanks from the mothers and the father.
