On our first day in Gambia, we visited Tanji Village, home to one of the largest fish markets in the country. Located right on the coastline, the Tanji Fish Market offers a truly authentic experience. Freshly caught fish are carried directly from the brightly painted fishing boats onto the beach, where they are cleaned and sold immediately— can't get any fresher than this! 🐟 Walking through the buzzing crowd was both impressive and almost overwhelming. The air was filled with the smell of the sea, the sounds of shouting vendors, and the vibrant colors of clothes and market stalls. It was a sensory explosion—so different from anything we know in Europe. Your eyes don’t know where to look first: the flurry of activity on the water, the rhythm of the fishermen at work, and the vivid display of fish being cleaned, smoked, and sold. Experiencing this organized chaos felt magical, raw, and unforgettable. 🇬🇲
You can just enter the town and go straight to the market, you can't miss it. 😉
TIP: a direct flight from Brussels Airlines gets you from Brussels to Banjul (capital of The Gambia) ✈️
