Grand Canyon of Spain

During our workation, we were lucky to have one completely free day. We absolutely wanted to spend it exploring the route to and the Desierto de Gorafe "los Coloraos" itself, also known as the "Andalusian Cappadocia" or the "Grand Canyon of Spain".

Beas de Guadix, Spain

At the end of the world

We drove to Mirador del Fin del Mundo, a viewpoint that lives up to its name—"Viewpoint of the End of the World". You can find it near the town of Beas de Guadix, and once at the top, you have a panoramic view of the Granada Geopark. Imagine a rugged terrain, with deep ravines and lots of rock formations. Definitely worth a stop at te start of your day!

Guadix, Spain

Guadix and its caves

Going back to Roman times in Guadix! This city is known for its cave dwellings, where many locals still live today. These unique homes, carved into the rocks, provide natural insulation against the extreme temperatures of the region. In Guadix, you can visit the impressive Cathedral of Guadix and explore the Alcazaba (a Moorish fortress). The best viewpoint is Barrio de las Cuevas. From here you can see the city and its surrounding countryside.

Relax at Lake Negratin

Lake Negratin is one of Andalusia's largest freshwater lakes, created by the Negratin Dam along the Guadiana Menor River. The lake is a real stunner, with colors that shift from aquamarine to cobalt blue depending on the time of day and the sun’s position. Surrounded by cliffs, it's the perfect spot for anyone looking to escape, relax, and soak in the sun. For water lovers, Lake Negratin has a lot to offer as well! You can go canoeing or sailing for example. I loved the view at this picturesque spot.

Gorafe, Spain

Sunset in the desert

Desierto de Gorafe in Andalusia has the most amazing landscapes. We were speechless all the way up to this great viewpoint: Puntal De Don Diego. It also makes the perfect spot for an unforgettable sunset 😉 To reach Puntal De Don Diego, drive from the village of Gorafe. It takes about half an hour, and you can drive all the way to the top, with the last part being a gravel road. But we made it with our Fiat 500! :) At Puntal De Don Diego, you get a fantastic view of the desert’s rock formations and wide plains. The red, orange, and yellow rocks look especially amazing as the sun starts to set. It can get chilly after the sun sets, so bring some warmer clothes with you.
