Spending a day and night in the Wahiba Sands desert is an experience you’ll never forget. Adventure, culture and silence blend together in this magical corner of Oman. Here’s how to make the most of 24 hours in the desert:
1. Drive into the desert
Hop in a 4x4 and make your way to your desert camp. The ride is bumpy and super challenging - but that’s part of the fun! If you are unsure about making the trip to your camp entirely on your own, you can ask the camp hosts to accompany you and drive ahead of you. You will then meet up at the edge of the desert.
2. Sandboarding & dune bashing
Whether you want to race down the slopes on a board or let an experienced driver take you on a thrilling ride across the dunes, adrenaline is guaranteed.
3. Taste Omani hospitality
Sip local kahwa, try fresh dates and learn about the desert lifestyle from the people who call it home.
4. Sunset hike
Climb the highest dune you can find. Watching the desert turn gold, pink and orange is a view you won’t forget 🌅
5. Dinner & campfire
Enjoy a traditional Omani dinner and gather around the fire under the starry sky - sometimes with a surprise fire show! 🔥
6. Stargazing
With zero light pollution, the Milky Way shines bright above you 🌌
7. Meet the camels
Spot wild camels roaming freely in the dunes - they’re just as curious about you as you are about them 🐪
You can also go on a camel ride, but make sure to check that the animals are not being exploited and try to do this in the most animal-friendly way possible.
8. Sunrise hike
Wake up early for a short hike and watch the first light of day slowly illuminate the endless sandscape 🌞
Wahiba Sands gave us adventure, culture and quiet magic all at once. If you’re in Oman, make sure the desert is on your list 🤍
