At 10 a.m., we began our six-hour drive toward Nyungwe Forest. Along the way, we made a worthwhile stop at the King’s Palace Museum, the former residence of Rwanda’s last monarch. The rest of the drive offered plenty to take in—scenes of daily life unfolding in villages and along the roadside. By 6 p.m., we arrived at Kitabi EcoCenter, our base for the night.
King's Palace
It was a short but interesting visit, giving us a glimpse into royal life and a chance to stretch our legs. Also quite the highlight: the iconic long-horned Inyambo cows on the palace grounds. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to see them. And while the entrance fee wasn’t the cheapest, it felt worth it for a quick cultural stop.

Kitabi EcoCenter
Our cozy hut for the night was inspired by the same traditional architecture we had just seen at the palace, which made for a nice continuation of the day’s theme. From the EcoCenter, we had great views over the Nyungwe Forest—our home for the next few days.
