Cueva del Viento, also known as the "Cave of the Wind," is a fascinating volcanic cave in Icod de los Vinos. This cave was formed 27,000 years ago from basaltic lava during the first eruption phase of the Pico Viejo volcano, located next to the famous El Teide volcano. The name "Cave of the Wind" refers to the powerful gusts of wind that rush through the tunnel. With an impressive length of 18 kilometers (so far mapped), this lava tunnel is the fifth longest in the world. Cueva del Viento is a huge labyrinth of underground corridors with many still unexplored branches. What makes Cueva del Viento extra special is its unique geomorphology. The network of galleries is arranged on three different levels, a phenomenon that has not been found anywhere else in the world. The tour begins a little further on, where you will be taken by minibus to the starting point. During a 20-minute walk through the surrounding forest, the guide shares interesting information about the environment and the formation of the cave. Once you arrive at the entrance, you put on your helmet and descend. Would you like to visit the cave? Make sure to reserve a time slot a few weeks in advance, as demand is high and supply is limited. To preserve the cave as best as possible, only a few tours are organized in small groups. Visits are only possible under the guidance of a guide, so be on time to not miss this special adventure!
