Climbing Pico do Fogo was one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Cabo Verde. A thrilling 1,105-meter ascent over 3 hours, followed by an exhilarating 30-minute descent—sliding, laughing, and tumbling down the ashen slopes of this dramatic black volcano.
We only decided to take on the adventure the night before, unsure whether it would be doable with the kids. But we needn't have worried—they loved every minute of it, especially the fast and dusty descent!
Our day began early, meeting our guide at 5 a.m. in the hotel lobby. The drive to Chã das Caldeiras usually takes about an hour, though ours stretched to 90 minutes thanks to an unexpected detour—turns out there's only one gas station in the area, and we had to backtrack to reach it. From the base, the real journey began.
The hike was tough but utterly rewarding, with breathtaking views. By 11 a.m., we stood triumphantly at the summit, peering into the crater. Just 30 minutes later, we were back down in the village, dusty and tired but riding a high, ready for a well-earned local lunch.
We returned to the hotel dirty, exhausted—and completely fulfilled.
