Fortified cities and polder walks
Typical of Noord-Brabant are the fortified cities called "Vestigingssteden" in Dutch. You can combine a visit to one of these star-shaped cities with a walk around the low lands of the Biesbosch area.

Visit the fortified city Geertruidenberg
'Vestingssteden' are fortified cities with characteristic shapes. Geertruidenberg, for example, is star-shaped. Today, fortified city Geertruidenberg is also called "Fortress City on the Biesbosch. This because of its centuries-long relations with the area. There are beautifully preserved monuments in Geertruidenberg such as bastions and ravelins. Although Geertruidenberg's history starts at the 13th centruy, most buildings date from the 17th century (also impressive). The terraces on the historic market with lime trees offer a view of monumental buildings and cultural-historical sights such as the Geertruidskerk. Further east, you can also find fortified city Heusden with even more medieval streets and buildings.

Where to eat & drink in Geertruidenberg
Although Geertruidenberg is small, you can tickle your tastebuds in several bars and restaurants: Tapperij Huis ten Bos - An old pub that is just perfect for a tap beer. The amount of royalty portraits and historical items that decorate the place is unbelievable. Weeshuys - Fine dining in Geertruidenberg. Expect small but refined dishes in a modern setting. Wijnbar nr. 13 - Fancy a wine? Go to Wijnbar nr. 13. Beyond the extensive wine list, you can also enjoy some tasty tapas, various cheeses and snacks.

Evening hike around the polders of Aakvlaai
