Hike to Grunas Waterfall

Start your day with a hike to Grunas Waterfall. The trail begins near the village and follows the river most of the way. It’s well-marked, but we recommend downloading the maps.me app with the Albania map, so you can follow the route offline. The hike takes around 45 minutes and is fairly easy, with just a few gentle climbs.

Continue to the Blue Eye of Theth

From the waterfall, continue hiking to the Blue Eye of Theth. This part takes around 2 hours. The Blue Eye is a deep, turquoise pool with a small waterfall and icy cold water. It’s surrounded by forest and mountains, making it one of the most beautiful spots we’ve seen in Albania. There’s a guesthouse and café above the natural pool where you can relax and enjoy the view from above.

See the iconic Church of Theth

After the hike, take it easy and explore the village. One of the most photographed spots is the Church of Theth. It stands in the middle of a wide open field with mountains all around, and honestly it looks like something from a fairytale. We felt like we had stepped into The Sound of Music. 😉

Visit the Reconciliation Tower

Just a short walk from the church is the Reconciliation Tower. It was once used to protect men involved in blood feuds under the old Kanun laws. If someone broke the rules, they had to hide here until the victim’s family decided their fate. You can go inside and see the small rooms and thick stone walls. Entry costs 150 LEK (€ 1,50) per person.

Dinner at Villa Gjeçaj Guesthouse and Restaurant

For dinner, head to Villa Gjeçaj Guesthouse and Restaurant. They serve tasty local food with plenty of vegetarian options. The place is small and cozy, and the staff are really friendly. We also really enjoyed their wine!
