Tijd voor een safari in het beroemde Yala National Park
In de zuidhoek van Sri Lanka ligt het Yala National Park, bekend om zijn populatie luipaarden. Het safaripark is het bekendste van het land en wordt veel bezocht vanuit verschillende plaatsen aan de zuidkust. We kozen Tissamaharama als onze basis, een charmante stad dicht bij het Yala National Park. Tissamaharama biedt een rustige omgeving en dient als een ideaal startpunt voor het verkennen van de diverse fauna en de betoverende landschappen die de regio kenmerken.

This park has five different ecosystems which promises a very diverse safari with a lot of wildlife like peacocks, water buffalos, crocodiles, deer, monkeys, mongooses, elephants and it has the highest population of leopards. You can choose to do a half or a full day safari. Both mornings and afternoons have their benefits. From what we’ve heard the biggest chance to see leopards is when it rains because that’s a sign for them to move.

Watch the fruitbats’ sky spectacle
Every evening at sunset hundreds or even thousands of fruit bats fly out of the two trees located at the lake. It’s a spectacle to see and hear them and it’s not touristic at all. We were the only ones there, which made it even more special. The location on Google Maps is called: ‘Fruit Bats View Point’. It’s easiest accessible with your own transport but you could also walk from the lakeside.
