Vulkaan Nationaal Park
We begonnen met een vroege transfer naar het Vulkaan Nationaal Park, waarbij we genoten van de schilderachtige rit van 6 uur. Onderweg stopten we voor de lunch. We gingen mountainbiken door het prachtige platteland in "het land van duizend heuvels". De uitdagende routes gaven ons een echte smaak van de fietscultuur van Rwanda, vooral met de UCI Wereldkampioenschappen Wegwielrennen 2025 om de hoek. Onze dag eindigde in Kinigi Cottage, zonder twijfel het beste verblijf van de reis.
Mountainbike experience in the Land of a Thousand Hills
The Rising Cycling Center is located near Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and is an important hub for cycling in the country. It was established as part of Team Rwanda Cycling, which supports and trains Rwandan cycling talent. The center aims to develop young cyclists and put Rwanda on the map as a cycling nation. They can come over for training, mechanical support, and sometimes accommodations. Additionally, it is a popular stop for bike travelers exploring the region, because of the stunning routes around the volcanoes and through Rwanda’s local villages. Since we were in the area, we decided to stop by and explore the surroundings by mountain bike. Especially with the 2025 UCI Road World Championships taking place in Kigali this year, it felt like the perfect way to experience Rwanda’s growing cycling culture firsthand. Quite a challenging route if you ask me! Countless elevation meters that truly lived up to Rwanda’s nickname: The Land of a Thousand Hills. Along the way, we passed the impressive bamboo gorilla sculpture, a tribute to the mountain gorillas that call this region home. This statue is linked to Kwita Izina, Rwanda’s annual gorilla naming ceremony, which celebrates the birth of new gorillas and promotes conservation efforts. It’s one of the biggest tourism events in Africa.
Kinigi Cottage: voel je thuis in Rwanda
Kinigi Cottage is een charmant landhuis in het dorp Kinigi, nabij het Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Het is eigendom van Joachim, een Belg die hierheen is verhuisd en deze parel van een verblijf is begonnen. De cottage en de mensen erachter waren zo warm en gastvrij. Het is nog niet lang open, en het interieur is veel beter dan Google laat zien - een verborgen parel die aan alle verwachtingen voldeed. Dit was zonder twijfel mijn favoriete verblijf tijdens onze hele week in Rwanda. We verbleven in de suite, die ongelooflijk ruim was. Het bed, dat vlak naast de grote ramen stond, was mijn absolute favoriete plek. En het balkon? Perfect om te genieten van de geluiden en uitzichten van tropische onweersbuien. Voor het diner en ontbijt laat je het personeel gewoon weten hoe laat je wilt eten, en zij hebben alles voor je klaargezet aan een grote gemeenschappelijke tafel in de gezellige woonkamer-stijl gemeenschappelijke ruimte. Op onze eerste avond deelden we toevallig het diner met twee andere gasten - ook uit België, maar uit het Franstalige deel. Het was zo hartverwarmend, afwisselend tussen het Frans, het Nederlands en het Engels in gesprek, moeiteloos verbinding maken over reiservaringen. We hebben er zo van genoten dat we besloten om de volgende dag weer samen te ontbijten en te dineren. Een laatste tip: kijk naar het schaakspel op mijn foto's. Het is het mooiste ontworpen bordspel dat ik ooit heb gezien!
