Oman's rugged beauty shines brightest in the northeast, where the dramatic Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape. Here, you'll find Jebel Shams, the country's highest peak, often called the "Grand Canyon of the Middle East." With its 3,000-meter summit and breathtaking canyon, it’s a must-visit for nature and hiking enthusiasts. The best way to explore? Hike the famous Balcony Walk (W6)! This scenic trail winds along steep cliffs, offering spectacular views. 📏 Distance: 7 km round trip ⏳ Duration: 3 to 4 hours 💰 Cost: Free 🚗 Parking: Free 🥾 Difficulty: Easy ♿ Accessibility: Not wheelchair accessible Many hikers start at sunrise (around 6 AM) when the morning glow makes the canyon even more stunning. We opted to enjoy the sunrise near the trailhead first, then returned to Jebel Shams Resort for a hearty breakfast. Of course, you can hit the trail right away and bring breakfast along, but keep in mind that there are no food options along the route - only a small café at the start. Once you set off, you’re on your own, making the hike even more adventurous! At 7:45 AM, energized and ready, we laced up our hiking shoes and started the trail. The Balcony Walk (W6) is relatively easy and doesn’t require a guide. It’s a linear route, meaning you follow the same path back and forth. Getting lost is nearly impossible, as the trail is well-marked with white-yellow-red stripes. Even without markers, the path is easy to follow. On the way out, you descend 200 meters, meaning there’s a slight uphill climb on the return. If you're afraid of heights, the beginning might feel a bit daunting, but once you get going, it’s perfectly manageable - trust us, Lotte can confirm from personal experience! Make sure to pause along the way to take in the breathtaking views. You might even spot some curious wild mountain goats. They’re still wild animals, so don’t try to pet them, but if you have a banana peel, they might appreciate the treat - from a safe distance. The trail ends at the abandoned mountain village of Al Sak, recognizable by its stone huts. Walk a little further, and you’ll reach the official endpoint. Here, you can catch your breath and, if you're feeling adventurous, search for the Hidden Cave before heading back.
