Borneo is a diver's paradise! 🪸 Warm turquoise waters, incredible biodiversity, and the chance to see everything from tiny nudibranch to big massive schools of barracuda make it a dream destination.
Mabul is the place to be. It’s far less touristy than other dive hubs in Borneo and makes the perfect base for exploring Sipadan - one of the world's best dive sites which is still wonderfully untouched compared to more crowded dive spots elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
Scuba Junkie's resort is a great base for a few days on Mabul. A relaxed setup with wooden bungalows, great food, and staff who make you feel right at home. Right next door is a Bajau Laut (sea gypsy) village, giving you a peek into traditional life on the sea. The dive team is amazing: fun, professional, and genuinely passionate about the ocean. Scuba Junkie takes care of everything - boat transfers from Semporna, permits for Sipadan, and of course, incredible diving.
And that's where it gets unreal. Mabul & Kapalai are all about the little stuff. Tiny frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, octopus. Macro heaven! Sipadan is a whole other level. 🦈 Huge schools of jackfish and barracuda, turtles everywhere, reef sharks gliding past, and vertical coral walls that just disappear into the deep. On my first dive there, I literally didn’t know where to look - it’s that good.
Each day means three dives, with Sipadan days starting early. After two dives around Sipadan, you’ll have lunch on the island before heading back to Mabul or Kapalai for the third.
When you’re not diving, you can snorkel in the house reef, stretch out in the sun, or just hang at the bar and watch the sky light up at sunset.
