If you are visiting the Marche region in Italy, one place that should not be missed is the Frasassi Caves, known in Italian as Grotte di Frasassi. Located in Genga, they are among the largest cave systems in Europe. They were discovered in 1971 by a group of speleologists and opened to the public only three years later. Since then, they have become one of the most visited attractions in the region.
The caves can only be visited with a guided tour. The section open to visitors is about 1.5 kilometers long and the tour lasts around 75 minutes. Inside, you walk through a series of enormous chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes and striking rock formations. The most impressive chamber for us was the Ancona Abyss, a hall so large that Milan’s cathedral could fit inside it. So impressive!
Tickets cost € 20 and can be purchased online or at the ticket office. A jacket is recommended because the temperature inside the caves quite cool.
After the visit, it is worth making a stop at the Valadier Temple, a neoclassical chapel built inside a limestone cave.
