Rio Lagartos

Rio Lagartos is a sleepy fishing town on the North shores of the Yucatan Peninsula. It was always used to live off the fishing industry, but slowly it is turning into a tourist hotspot. But don’t worry there are still only a handful tourists to be found here that come to admire the beautiful nature. Rio Lagartos is located at a lagoon and crocodiles are living here. The lagoon is declared a protected biosphere by UNESCO since 2004 because of its breeding ground for endless species of birds.

Las Coloradas Pink Lake

Another tourist attraction popping up in this regio’s is Las Coloradas Pink Lake. Las Coloradas Pink Lake is about 20 minutes drive from Rio Lagartos and due to its high concentration of salt it makes it a perfect breeding ground for algae which give the water the pink color. The Pink Lake is actually controlled by the Salt mine and so private area. However, the workers around will offer you to enter the premisses with them on a ‘guided tour’ and it actually is only 50 Pesos a little over 2 dollar. Although there is not much to see, it’s nice to get a clear picture with the Pink Lake.

Valladolid at Night

There are very few hotels in Rio Lagartos, so we’re heading back to Valladolid. As the sun sets in Valladolid, the town’s vibrant cultural scene comes to life. Enjoy some good Mexican food and relax on one of the traditional benches in front of the main church in the heart of Valladolid to soak up the atmosphere.
