We had a blast taking a Balinese cooking class at Tumang Bali, and we couldn’t wait to share our experience! Our culinary adventure began with a visit to a bustling local market. Wayan, our lively and comedic guide/chef, made this stroll incredibly fun. He introduced us to various exotic fruits, herbs, and spices. We could even taste some along the way!
Then it was finally time to make our way to Wayan’s traditional family complex, beautifully located amidst the rice fields in Ubud. We had no idea that making traditional offerings would be part of our experience, but it turned out to be a fun surprise!
To then cook in the middle of beautiful nature like this was so great! Everyone in our small group was actively involved, something Wayan made sure of. We prepared ten dishes including chicken with turmeric sauce and coconut milk and the famous Indonesian “green pancakes”. In between cooking we could also taste our "self made" crackers (“kroepoek”), so we were never hungry.
Wayan’s guidance was clear and filled with humor. We felt like one big family by the end of it, sharing stories, laughs, and snapping lots of photos. After cooking, we laid out a grand buffet and shared a delicious meal together. The food was unbelievably tasty (if we do say so ourselves), and to eat it together with our newly made friends was such a special moment. To top it off, they gave us the recipes of all dishes so that we could recreate everything at home!
