Our final, totally unplanned stop on our North Italian road trip turned out to be an absolute show a.k.a food-stopper: Lago Maggiore. No packed schedule, no bucket-list ticking… just mangiare, mangiare & mangiare. In between? A little wandering, endless lingering at the table, and pretending that 'slow living' is basically a sport. Because that’s exactly what the true Lago Life is all about!
- Cannero, your Launchpad to Lago Life:
The last-minute search for a campsite, preferably a small one and not surrounded by ten other campsites, brought us to Cannero. A little gem on Lake Maggiore. Cannero, small as it is, has it all! What does your day look like? You start the day with a refreshing dip in the lake, then walk to the bakery higher up for breakfast. Stroll through the narrow alleys towards the boulevard. While waiting for the ferries, enjoy an aperitivo or two. When you return in the evening, repeat this ritual. Swap the bakery for a pizza on one of the many benches on the boulevard.
- Ferry over to Trattoria Cannobio da Ale & Vale:
So from Cannero, jump on the ferry to Cannobio and head straight for Trattoria Cannobio da Ale & Vale. Save the stroll through the village for afterwards, you’ll need it. What’s waiting? Quite possibly the best vongole of your life.
- Wander Cannobio:
As mentioned, you’ll need that stroll. Cannobio charms with narrow cobbled lanes, authentic Italian character, and a stunning lakeside boulevard.
- La Casera, say Cheese & Charcuterie:
Your self-control will be severely tested here. Sure, it’s well-known among tourists, but that doesn’t make it any less worth a stop. What you’ll wish for when leaving? A return trip home with a van piled high with cheese and charcuterie enough to last you a year, or at least until your next Lago Life adventure.
- Ittico Fish Bar, the Kiosk immersed in Fish, Wine & Seafood:
Close your Lago Life adventure like a true pro. Picture this: a hip, kiosk-style fish bar with a wine list that could make sommeliers weep. Sunset over the lake, locals from the nearby tennis courts casually invading the bar, and the food… oooh, the food. Just Bravo!
That, mio amore, is the Lago Life...
