Stroll around Schwangau (Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Pöllat Gorge)

free

We parked the car at Alpseestraße 27, 87645 Schwangau, Germany, where there’s a large car park. From there, we walked up to Schloss Hohenschwangau. On the way up, you pass along the beautiful shore of the Alpsee. The trail is clearly marked and it’s an easy, short hike to the castle. You can walk around the castle grounds and visit the gardens for free. We didn’t go inside since we had our dog with us and dogs aren’t allowed. After a short stroll around the Hohenschwangau castle, we headed back down and continued our hike along Neuschwansteinstraße. It’s a relaxing and scenic walk through the forests and landscapes of Schwangau. This area can get really crowded, so we wanted to experience it without the masses. People generally don’t enjoy hiking as much as we do so it was a win-win. We hiked until we reached the Pöllat Gorge, a beautiful and wild ravine that unfortunately was closed due to rockfall. According to some locals, it might reopen under the right conditions. We were a bit disappointed as we’re always up for some adventure but decided to continue our hike to a lesser-known viewpoint of Neuschwanstein Castle. One I discovered a few years ago while scouting on Google Maps. This village is heavily visited by tourists but it’s still a beautiful place to explore. We managed to avoid the crowds and enjoyed a wonderful walk around the area with our dog. It has become a yearly tradition for us when traveling to the mountains. We usually go off-season and I wouldn’t recommend visiting during high season if you prefer a quiet, relaxing experience.
