There are numerous archaeological and sacred sites in the city, too many and too expensive to visit them all. We select a few and immerse ourselves in information about Buddhism, the monks, and the temples. Just half an hour away lies the sacred city of Mihintale, renowned for bringing Buddhism to Sri Lanka. The monk Mahinda preached here about the teachings of Buddha to the king of Sri Lanka, introducing Buddhism to the country as one of its primary beliefs. Exploring the site barefoot, there are three ascents that provide a different perspective of the surroundings. Staying until the sun sets, the magic of this place is evident. Rarely does a place leave visitors so silent. The next day will be a travel day.
Visit the sacred town of Mihintale
Mihintale is a magical, sacred place. It’s here where the buddhist monk Mahinda introduced the teachings of Buddha to the island of Sri Lanka, forever shaping its spiritual heritage. There are three tops that you can climb. One with the buddha, another one with the big stoepa and a viewpoint. The sceneries are amazing. The best time to go is at sunrise or sunset as the sky is coloured magically, and the view is amazing.
