Split, ancient Roman city on the Adriatic sea
Split is a popular tourist destination in Croatia. This city on the adriatic sea is the located in the middle of the country so it is an ideal place to fly into or make a stop on your Croatia roadtrip like we did. Most people come here to have a nice relaxing beach vacation where you can combine a beach vacation with a citytrip in one. But there is more to do and see here besides relaxing! Did you know that there is an ancient Roman palace in the middle of city? The city is quite big and you can easily spend two days or more here. I have the perfect daytrip but you could also split it into 2 days if you want to have more time for relaxing :)

There are a lot of veggie/vegan options here as well!

Visit to the Red Keep
Are you a fan of the popular show Game Of Thrones? Then head out for a visit to Kliss Fortress. This fortress has been used as a filming location for the popular hit show. You can recognize it also as Red Keep but it has been used as a backdrop for a lot of different scenes. Even if you are not a fan it’s still worth considering visiting, as the Fort has great views over the city of Split! The Fortress can be reached in 20-30 minutes driving from Split, parking is free and entrance to the Fort is 10 euro’s.

Split boulevard and Venice vibes
Head back to the town of Split and now it’s time to explore this city by the Adriatic sea! We start at a square called Trg Rupublike. When wandering around this square you will feel like you are walking around Venice! Then from here walk towards the Riva boulevard. This boulevard is definitely the place to be in Split, especially in the evening. You could also stop here for some lunch at one of the many places near and around the boulevard. For example you can go to a place called Good Food, where they sell burgers and wraps and you can even take it to go if you like.

Palace of Diocletianus
From here walk towards the palace of Diocletianus. This palace was built by an roman emporer in 293AD with the same name, has almost completely gone up in the surrounding city. It it very cool to wander around the neighbourhood and spot different parts of the remaining ruins including beautiful mosaic. Entrance is free.

Viva La Mexico
End the day with a delicious meal in one of the many places to choose from in Split. If you are in the mood for some delicious and affordable mexican food then check out Casa de Fuego!
