Adventure in Tsitsikamma

A short flight from Durban to Port Elizabeth and then a 2hr drive took us to Tsitsikamma, one of the highlights of the Garden Route. The Kayak & Lilo tour was pure fun, the cold water didn't bother us wearing the wetstuits, paddling between steep cliffs and floating on calm, dark water. Afterwards, we hiked to the famous hanging bridges, the air full of sea spray and the sound of waves crashing below. Before sunset, we continued along the Garden Route toward Plettenberg Bay.

Dinner at Hunter’s Pub, Storms River

We ended up at Hunter’s Pub because De Oude Martha was fully booked, and it turned out to be a very happy backup plan. The pub has a classic, old-school feel, with lots of character and cozy details that make it feel like it’s been there forever. The atmosphere was relaxed and lively, and the food was really good. One of those places where you’re glad things didn’t go according to plan.

Kayak & Lilo Tour

Because the sea was too rough on the day of our activity, the kayaking part on the ocean was skipped. Instead, we hiked to the point where the river starts. It was a beautiful walk, although doing it in a wetsuit while carrying a paddle wasn’t ideal, so we came back later fully dressed to really enjoy it and take photos. Once on the river, we paddled between the cliffs, which was absolutely worth it. When the river narrowed, we switched to a lilo, basically a floating mattress, and drifted further into the gorge. On the way back, we stopped to jump off a cliff into the water. Renting the wetsuit was a great choice, because without it the water would’ve been too cold.

Hanging Bridges Hike

This hike takes you across suspension bridges with views over the river and the forest below. The wooden path is well maintained, but there are some steep sections that make it a bit challenging. When we crossed the bridges, we were completely alone, which made it extra special. On the way back, we passed a lot more people, so timing definitely matters. It’s a short hike, but the views make it very rewarding.
