🚶♀️We spent a slow afternoon wandering through Alhaurín el Grande, a charming whitewashed town tucked into the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas. The town has a rich history that dates back to Roman and Moorish times, and you can feel it in the narrow cobbled streets, old stone walls, and little squares. The town has several little churches, each with its own character.
🍴 We wandered without much direction, letting the rhythm of local life guide us: elderly men chatting on benches, children playing on their bikes, the scent of fresh bread from the many nearby bakeries. For lunch, we tucked into a shady side street and found Casa La Abuela, a cozy tapas restaurant that turned out to be a true gem. We ordered a mix of tapas to share: Torreznos de Soria, crispy and flavorful pork belly; Alcachofas confitadas con papada ibérica y cebolla caramelizada, tender artichokes with Iberian pork and caramelized onions; and Morcilla de arroz frita con crema de pimientos asados, fried rice blood sausage with roasted pepper cream.
We also tried a crepe de pulled pork, aguacate y mayo-shichimi and a brioche con rabo de toro, filled with tender oxtail in its own sauce, crispy onions, and a hint of teriyaki. Every dish was perfectly balanced, creative yet comforting, and surprisingly beautiful presented. I must say, the lunch was a bit too heavy for such a warm afternoon. -Only €45 for such a filled table!-
