Three friends, two kayaks, one river. That’s how we kicked off our midday on the Maas — floating from Smeermaas to Kotem on what’s easily one of the most peaceful kayak routes I’ve done so far.
We went for the 8 km route, which takes about 2 hours depending on the current. Not that we were in a rush. We soaked up the sun and laughed about who had to steer — while occasionally getting splashed by the one in front (classic).
This part of the Rivierenpark Maasvallei feels raw and beautifully untouched. Along the banks, we spotted Konik horses and Galloways, completely unbothered by our passing kayaks.
And just when we started craving a drink in the sun, there it was: Zomerbar Maasvalley. Tucked away in Herbricht, it’s the perfect place to dock your kayak, kick off your shoes, and order something ice-cold. Open every weekend from May on — ideal for anyone paddling, hiking, or cycling through the area.
Best part? You don’t even have to worry about logistics. A shuttle bus picks you up at Kotem and drops you off at the launch point in Smeermaas. Just show up, paddle, and let the river do the rest.
Few things beat a sunny river day with good friends, cold drinks, and wild horses for company.
