Some cities you visit, but New York you feel. During my 2,5 weeks here, slowing down showed me a completely different side of the city: creative crowds, tiny stages, local coffeeshops and evenings that unfolded without a plan. These are the seven places that made the city feel like mine for a while.
• Wine & dine at Le Dive in the Lower East Side, a lively French bistrobar where open windows, tiny tables and a creative crowd create the perfect New York evening vibe.
• Spend your Monday night in Brooklyn's "Union Pool", at Reverend Vince Anderson's gospel show. A chaotic, soulful mix of music and community that fills the back room of this bar with pure local energy. A must when you're in the city. The concept: pay what you want. Something different than the always so expensive Manhattan.
• Choose an "off-Broadway" performance for a more intimate, creative take on New York theater, the kind of show you only find when you step off the classic playlist. I chose for "Slam Frank", a satire play in a rather small venue - it was hilarious!
• Start your day with coffee on the go at La Cabra, L’Appartement 4F or Elbow Bread. Each with its own charm and pastries worth crossing the neighborhood for.
• Go vintage shopping in the Lower East Side, where small designer boutiques and secondhand gems make wandering the streets half the fun.
• Plan a romantic evening in West Village, strolling past brownstones and lampposts before settling into one of the cozy restaurants or wine bars that make the neighborhood feel instantly livable.
• End your night in Williamsburg with jazz and oysters, starting at Sauced for natural wine, moving to St. Mazie’s for live jazz, and finishing at Maison Premiere for a late cocktail at the bar.
Hope you'll enjoy these places as much as I do!
