Sesriem Canyon

Sesriem Canyon is a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab river in the local sedimentary rock, about one kilometre long and up to 30 metres deep. It's only a short drive from the Sesriem gate, but it is easily missed, because it is almost hidden. You need to take a gravel road that's a bit rough but ok of you do it slow and careful.

Elim Dune

The Elim Dune is easy to find, as you can see it from the Sesriem entry gate and it is only a short drive (about 5 km). It’s a relatively isolated dune situated on the main road to Sossusvlei. Elim Dune is not as big and as beautiful as the dunes in deadvlei but they are very nice to go there as the colours are fantastic and the dunes are covered here with yellow grass. The walk is a bit hard as it’s really loose sand but with good shoes you can make it.

Namibia’s national animal: The Oryx

The Oryx, also known as the Gemsbok, is a large and strikingly beautiful antelope. The oryx is striped and tan in colour with two horns set atop its head. They are extremely tolerant to the challenging Namibian conditions and can be found all over the countryside. Top spots to get a glimpse of the Oryx, Namibi’s national animal, include Etosha NP and the Namib-Naukluft area. However, they are so common throughout Namibia that you are likely to see them next to the road throughout the entire country. Seeing them in the dunes at Sossusvlei against the backdrop of the rising sun, however, is especially memorable. Keep an eye out for the characteristic large hoofed tracks on the soil.
