Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu
Distance of day 5: 6,8 km. Machu Picchu babyyyyyy!

Morning arrival at Machu Picchu
After days of trekking, Day 5 brought us to the crown jewel: Machu Picchu. We caught the first bus up from Aguas Calientes at 6 AM, and as the ruins appeared through the early morning mist, saying we were fascinated is an understatement. The past few days felt like a dream, all leading to this moment, and we couldn’t wait to see Machu Picchu with our own eyes!

Exploring Machu Picchu
With the sky finally clear after days of rain, we spent hours wandering through ancient stone terraces, temples, and plazas. Guided by our tour guide Rolando, we learned all about the site’s history, all while a few curious llamas followed us around. And of course, we took a loooooot of photos!

Farewell lunch and back to Cusco
Lunch wasn’t included in the tour, but with all those new friends we made these past 5 days it was a no brainer to have lunch one more time. Such a great way to finish off an amazing trek, what made it even better is that we all received our hiking certificates. We can now proudly say that we completed the Salkantay Trek! After lunch, it was time to head back to Cusco. First, we hopped on the train and then a minivan. By the time we reached Cusco we were exhausted, but our hearts were full. 🥹
