After a short ride across the water on a chaloupe, we arrived on Gorée Island. No cars here, just peaceful, beautiful streets where life moves slowly. It’s the perfect place to take a deep breath and disconnect. A guide is a great idea to fully understand the history of the island, the story of the slaves, and the events that have shaped this place. Gorée has a lot to tell, and it’s fascinating to learn about its past. The highlight of the day was definitely visiting La Maison des Esclaves. The story is heavy and heartbreaking, but it's important to remember that many countries, especially European ones, built their wealth on the backs of black slaves. It's a sobering experience that makes you reflect on the painful history. Throughout the day, you'll uncover many interesting facts, a true journey back in time that shows how tough life must have been for decades. While most people do the trip as a day visit, we decided to stay on the island and sleep in a cozy little hostel. After the tourists leave, the island becomes incredibly quiet and peaceful. The sunset light is breathtaking, and the local people are friendly and welcoming. You'll also find some delicious local restaurants to enjoy. The island is small, so just walk around and let yourself get lost. You’ll feel great, I promise. Getting there is easy too—Brussels Airlines flies direct from Brussels to Dakar several times a week. Smooth, simple, and straight to the sun.
