A sunrise balloon ride? Say no more. We got up super early and made our way to the Decathlon parking lot in Maasmechelen, where Bjorn and the Stepin Balloons team were waiting for us. Two balloons would be going up that morning, and we were lucky enough to have our own little compartment in one of them, so the three of us could stick together while Bjorn stood in his own section, cool and collected.
After a quick intro and safety briefing, we helped get everything ready: unfolding the giant balloon, watching it fill with air, holding things down — the full experience. And then, just like that, we were off. No bump, no big moment, we honestly didn’t even realise we were flying until we looked down.
The conditions were perfect. No wind, clear skies, and a sunrise that painted everything in soft gold. We floated for almost an hour over the most beautiful scenes: the Terhills hills, dense forests, the Maas river, even the “fietsen door de heide” trail and everything looked more magical from above.
One of the best parts? Watching the other balloon drift beside us, backlit by the rising sun. Surreal.
Bjorn was a fantastic guide, answering all our silly questions and pointing out landmarks as we flew. The landing was... let’s say dynamic. After a couple of almost-landings, we finally touched down in a random field (knees bent, hold on tight!). We helped pack up the balloon, then toasted the morning with a little glass of cava, standing in the middle of nowhere with huge grins on our faces.
Would 100% do again.
