Istanbul in one day

Thanks to a long layover on our way to Malaysia, we got to enjoy a bonus adventure in Istanbul! Turkish Airlines offered a free overnight stay, a lovely surprise, and we made the most of it. We stayed at the charming Armada Hotel, took the metro up north, and walked all the way back, 21 km of wandering through history, vibrant streets, and iconic sights. From Beyoğlu to the Bosphorus, it was a whirlwind day full of impressions, steps (24,608 to be exact!), and a little magic between continents.

Taksim Square & İstiklal Avenue

After a steep climb and countless steps, we finally reached Taksim Square, the beating heart of modern Istanbul. From there, we strolled down the lively İstiklal Avenue, a street that never seems to sleep. The atmosphere was buzzing: locals and tourists blending together, street food stands on every corner, shops full of color, and of course, the famous red tram slowly making its way through the crowd. We stopped to watch an ice cream vendor put on his classic playful show, a sweet treat and entertainment in one! It was the perfect place to soak in the energy of the city before heading downhill toward the old town.

Galata Bridge & Eminönü Square

We made our way across the iconic Galata Bridge, where fishermen lined both sides, casting their lines into the Golden Horn. Below, the smell of grilled fish drifted up from the boats and stalls selling balık ekmek, Istanbul's famous fish sandwiches. The views in every direction were stunning: mosques on the hills, ferries gliding over the water, and the hum of the city all around. Eminönü Square: Chaos and Charm Right after crossing, we entered the buzzing Eminönü Square, where the city's energy hits you full force. Trams screeched by, seagulls circled above, and crowds moved in every direction, toward the Spice Bazaar, the Yeni Cami, or the ferry docks. It was chaotic, colourful, and completely captivating, classic Istanbul.

Hagia Sophia & Blue Mosque

As the sun began to set, we found ourselves standing between two of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks: the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. We didn’t go inside, but what followed was even more memorable. The call to prayer began, first a line echoing from the Hagia Sophia, then a response from the mosque across the square. Back and forth, their voices filled the sky. The square fell into a quiet rhythm as people paused, listened, prayed, or simply took it in, just like us. Surrounded by history, sound, and golden light, we stood still and let the city speak.
