Day 7: Gjirokaster to Himare

You’ve seen the mountains and historic cities, now it’s time for the highlight of Albania: the Albanian Riviera. Make your way to Himare, one of our favorite places in the country. The drive takes around 2 hours, and the views along the way are beautiful.

Porto Palermo, Albania

Porto Palermo Castle

Before reaching Himare, stop at Porto Palermo Castle. This large, triangular fortress sits on a small peninsula with views over the bright blue sea. It was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha, a powerful ruler during the Ottoman Empire. Back then, it was surrounded by water, but today you can walk to it across a narrow strip of land. Inside, you’ll find dark stone halls, an old prison, and a rooftop with great views of the coastline. Entrance is 300 LEK (€ 3).

Relax at Potami Beach

After checking in at your hotel, head to Potami Beach. The water here is crystal-clear with beautiful shades of blue. It’s a great place to swim, relax, or just enjoy the sun. You can rent 2 sunbeds and an umbrella for € 15. There are a few beach bars and restaurants nearby, so it’s easy to grab a drink or something to eat during the day.

Dinner and sunset at Spile Beach

In the evening, head to Spile Beach for dinner. There are plenty of beachfront restaurants and bars, and the atmosphere is relaxed and lively. We watched the sunset with a glass of wine at Manolo Beach Bar, where happy hour deals include wine for € 5 and cocktails for € 7. Prices here are a bit higher than in other parts of Albania, but the setting makes it worth it!
