Breakfast at Te Kubé

Start your day with breakfast at Te Kubé, located right under the Bazaar Mosque. This cute little café offers vegan sweets and light bites. Their carrot cake was our favorite!

Visit Zekate House

Your first stop is Zekate House, built between 1811 and 1812. It’s located above the Old Bazaar, so be ready for a steep walk up the cobbled streets. Inside, you’ll find three floors with high ceilings, original furniture, and beautiful stone arches. The main guest room is the highlight, decorated with hand-painted murals, detailed woodwork, and a stunning ceiling. The balconies offer a great view over the city and valley. Entry is 300 LEK (€ 3).

Explore Skenduli House

Next is Skenduli House, one of the best-preserved Ottoman houses in Gjirokaster. It dates back to the early 1700s, with some parts rebuilt in 1827. You can explore almost every room, including a wedding room and even a bunker. What makes this house special is the guided tour, usually given by a member of the family that still owns it. And we have to admit the house cat stole our hearts as well. 😉 Entry is 300 LEK (€ 3).

Visit Ismail Kadare’s House

The last house worth visiting is Ismail Kadare’s House, home to Albania’s most famous writer. The original building from 1799 was restored after a fire in 1999 and now functions as a museum. It’s more modern than the other houses but still gives a good insight into Kadare’s early life. Inside, you’ll find personal items, information about his work, and the story of his life. Entry is 500 LEK (€ 5).

Hike to Ali Pasha Bridge

In the afternoon, go for a hike to Ali Pasha Bridge, part of a 19th-century aqueduct system that once brought water from Mount Sopot to the castle. The hike takes about 30 to 40 minutes from the center. It starts on a paved road, then turns into a rocky trail that leads down into a quiet valley. The trail can be steep in parts, especially if it’s hot, but the views are worth it. We brought snacks and took a break at the bridge, watching the sun go down in peace. A perfect way to end the day!
