When travelling through Borneo, chicken and rice will become a familiar part of your daily menu. So when we reached Kota Kinabalu and found ourselves craving something different, we were thrilled to discover a hidden gem at the city’s bustling waterfront: Gusto Food & Wine.
Among the many touristy spots with laminated menus and waiters pulling you in, Gusto quietly stands out. It felt like stepping into a little piece of Italy, right on the coast of Borneo.
The concept here is simple and brilliant: wine and dine. You start by choosing a bottle of wine from their enoteca. The owner personally guides you through the Italian wine selection, asking what you usually like and offering thoughtful suggestions. Once you’ve found your bottle, you enjoy some delicious Italian food and watch the sun go down. It was hands down one of our favourite meals on the trip.
