Classic sights
On your first day you’ll see the main highlights on and around Piazza Maggiore.

See the Fontana del Nettuno
Your first stop in Bologna is the famous Fontana del Nettuno. The fountain is impressive on its own, but it’s also known for a playful detail. From a certain angle, Neptune’s thumb looks like something else. Can you see what we’re talking about? 😉

Visit Biblioteca Salaborsa
Just a few steps from the fountain is Bologna’s public library, the Biblioteca Salaborsa. In the middle of the building there’s a glass floor that lets you peek straight down at ancient ruins. The library is also full of books, maps and exhibitions, and has a cozy vibe. Make sure to check the opening hours before you go because they can be a bit unpredictable.

Climb the Torre dell’Orologio
On Piazza Maggiore you’ll find the Torre dell’Orologio. Climb to the top and you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view over Bologna and its sea of red rooftops. Tickets cost € 10 and you can buy them on the spot. The ticket also gets you into the Municipal Art Collections, where you’ll find paintings, sculptures and even old furniture. Since it’s included, it’s a nice bonus stop while you’re here.

Visit the Basilica di San Petronio
Another highlight on Piazza Maggiore is the Basilica di San Petronio, the largest and most important church in Bologna. Its façade is still unfinished, which makes it stand out right away. Step inside and you’ll find a main altar and twenty-two side chapels, each decorated with statues and paintings. Entrance is free, just remember to cover your shoulders and knees.

Aperitivo at Salumeria Simoni Laboratorio
Tucked in a side street of Piazza Maggiore, Salumeria Simoni Laboratorio is one of the best spots for aperitivo. Their cold cuts and cheeses are excellent, so go for a charcuterie board with a glass of wine or Aperol. The staff is super friendly, and you can choose between indoor seating or their lively terrace. If you want a table outside, make sure to come early because it fills up fast.

Dinner at Mercato di Mezzo
If you’re still hungry after the charcuterie board, head to Mercato di Mezzo. This indoor food market has a cozy vibe with plenty of stalls for food and drinks. We went for an Aperol Spritz for € 6 and a small margherita pizza for € 4,50, and both hit the spot. It’s a fun and tasty way to wrap up your first day in Bologna.
