Strolling through Valletta
For me personally, one of the best ways to discover a city I've never been before is to wander through its streets and alleyways without a fixed plan. In Valletta especially you can't go wrong with this approach as the entire city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you can expect unique views and buildings around every corner. You can visit St. John's Co-Cathedral, but keep in mind it's closed on Sundays and public holidays. Fancy a tour? Then make sure to plan ahead. A lot of places (especially in winter time) have limited capacity and don't open every day. The Underground Valletta tour for example only runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays between 10:00 and 13:00.

Pinsa lunch at Casa Sotto
You'll notice cultural influences from all over the world in Malta, and especially from nearby Sicily, with many Italian restaurants dotted around the island. Recommended by a local, Casa Sotto specialises in Pinsa Romana, a mix between a traditional pizza and a focaccia. The Napoli pinse was absolutely delicious and, at only €11,55 an absolute bargain!

Upper Barrakka Gardens and Fairyland
Nearing sunset, head over to the Upper Barrakka gardens for a beautiful view across the Grand Harbour towards the Three Cities (where you will be spending the night). One of the most Catholic countries in the world, visiting Malta around Christmas time also means plenty of sparkling lights and festive stalls. To finish the day, head to Pjazza Tritoni to revel in the holiday spirit and grab something to eat at the many stalls.

Stay at one of the homely studio apartments at Casa Cara. Situated in the quiet and picturesque Birgu, the property offers a large studio with all amenities included and is the ideal base to discover the rest of Malta. The cospicua ferry terminal to Valletta is only a short 10min walk away and there's a free parking area just a 2min walk away.
