What a backdrop
During our stay in Tam Coc, Ninh Binh, we opted for a more authentic experience by lodging in Tac Coc, which is known for its rustic charm away from central Ninh Binh. We checked-in at Friends Homestay, in the middle of rice paddies. Absolutely lovely. I remember texting my parents "look, this is my current backyard!".

Tam Coc by bike
We also rented bicycles in Tam Coc, exploring the rice fields at our leisure. The scenery was breathtaking. You'll pass some authentic eateries serving local delicacies during your ride, where you can have a delicious local lunch!

Visit the Mua Cave
We also visited Nihn Bìhn's most famous viewpoint: the Mua Cave. The hike up rewarded us with stunning panoramic views of the countryside! But don't be surprised, it takes a total of 500 steps to reach the top. You not only get to see the best view of Ninh Binh, but also the Lying Dragon statue.

Exploring Bich Dong Pagoda
Close to Tam Coc, in the mountains of Truong Yen, you can find the Bich Dong Pagoda. Constructed approximately 600 years ago, this site has a gate with a bridge and three charming pagodas. The three pagodas are positioned on different levels, each with its own name: the Low Pagoda (Ha Pagoda), Middle Pagoda (Trung Pagoda), and Top Pagoda (Thuong Pagoda). This architectural arrangement gives you great views on different heights!

An afternoon on a rowboat
We booked an afternoon boat ride—a must-do in Tam Coc. The limestone mountains, rice fields, and rivers are best appreciated from a slow rowboat. These boats are skillfully maneuvered by local women and men, often using their legs and feet to row. They've developed this unique technique to rest their arms during long days on the water. The boat journey also takes you through three caves—Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba—carved into the limestone formations.
