The Gambia

Day 5 - Oyster market & River boat tour

After waking up at AbCa's Creek and having a great breakfast, we drove 10 minutes to an oyster factory. We learned more about how they get the oysters, how they eat them (they boil them!) and what they do with the shells.

Oyster factory

At a local oyster factory we learned how they get the oysters. In Europe, Oysters are considered as a luxury product. In The Gambia, it isn't. They boil the oyster and the families of the factory workers can enjoy to eat it. The shells are saved and get dried. When completely dry, they crush the shells and mix it with a liquid to make cement out of it. Fun fact!

Boat trip on AbCa's Creek

During our stay at AbCa’s Greek Lodge in Kassagne, we took a peaceful boat trip along AbCa’s Creek, one of many branches of the Gambia River flowing to the Atlantic. As we cruised, our guide shared stories about the region’s wildlife. We spotted birds, admired towering baobab trees, and saw local boys learning to swim; part of daily life here, always in safe spots away from crocodiles.
