Lake Burera (La Paillotte island)
After a hearty breakfast at our hotel, La Locanda, we strolled around the neighborhood a bit before setting off for our next destination: Lake Burera, where we’d be glamping on a small island called La Paillotte. The journey there was quite an adventure—navigating narrow paths that really put our 4x4 jeep to the test. Google Maps wasn’t always reliable either, so on two occasions, local kids helped us find the right way. Eventually, we made it to the boat dock, where someone from La Paillotte was waiting to ferry us across to the island. Once we arrived, we checked into our cozy tent, “Bella Vista,” with stunning views of the lake and the towering 4,300-meter Muhavura volcano. We spent the afternoon relaxing on the terrace, watching the sunset.

Wind down at the campfire
Later, we gathered around a campfire kindled by Alex—a warm-hearted, deaf young man who works there and takes great pride in keeping the fire going all evening. We also tried some local banana beer, which packs a surprising 14% alcohol punch. By 9 pm, we were ready to call it a night.
