On the go with Dayo: part 2 of the road trip to Morocco
Occasionally, a Daymaker creator takes over our blog to share their journey. This is part 2 of Dayo's road trip from Belgium to Morocco. In this edition, he dives deeper into one of the highlights of his adventure so far: the breathtaking Picos de Europa National Park in northern Spain. Travel along!
Off-road adventure: Sotres to Espinama
“A local tipped me off to the only legal off-road route in the park. When I arrived, the peaks were unexpectedly blanketed in snow. Leaving Sotres early the next morning, I found myself on one of the most scenic off-road routes I’ve ever taken—just me, alone amidst Picos’ towering peaks, navigating through a snowy wilderness. It was thrilling, challenging, and absolutely beautiful.”
The route between Sotres and Espinama is not for the faint-hearted but rewards every turn with jaw-dropping views of snowy peaks and untouched landscapes. For Dayo, this part of the trip was both an adventure and a moment of complete solitude—a reminder of the raw beauty that nature offers.
Ruta del Cares: a hiker’s paradise
No trip to Picos is complete without a good hike. Dayo tackled part of the iconic Ruta del Cares, starting from Caín de Valdeón.
"This spectacular gorge trail didn’t disappoint. Even walking just a short 6-kilometer section provided stunning views of sheer cliffs and turquoise waters. For those who love hiking, it’s a must-see."
The trail is often referred to as one of Spain’s most breathtaking hikes, winding through narrow paths carved into the cliffs and offering unmatched views of the gorge’s dramatic beauty. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or someone looking for a taste of adventure, the Ruta del Cares promises an unforgettable experience.
Cable car at Fuente Dé: views above the clouds
Another unforgettable moment of Dayo’s journey was taking the teleférico (cable car) at Fuente Dé.
“The cable car lifted me to a high-altitude plateau. From the top, the park unfolded endlessly, the silence broken only by the wind. This spot, usually packed with tourists, was empty in November—I had it all to myself, a rare and magical experience.”
At over 1,800 meters above sea level, Fuente Dé offers panoramic views of the park’s peaks and valleys. Visiting in the quieter off-season meant Dayo had a rare moment of peace in a place that is usually bustling with travelers.
Camping under the stars at Lago de Riaño
To end his time in Picos, Dayo found a peaceful camping spot near Lago de Riaño.
"The lake revealed grassy fields perfect for setting up camp. A glowing sunset turned into a misty morning, creating one of the most serene moments of my journey. Although this part of the trip brought freezing nights and little sleep, it was worth every shiver."
Camping in Picos de Europa is not just about escaping the crowds—it’s about experiencing the park in its purest form. Under a sky full of stars and surrounded by the quiet majesty of the mountains, Dayo’s connection to the landscape deepened.
