During our stay at AbCa’s Greek Lodge in Kassagne, we went on a peaceful boat trip along AbCa’s Creek. All the waterways in The Gambia are branches of the Gambia River, which eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean. As we cruised through the calm waters, our guide shared fascinating insights about the region’s flora and fauna. We spotted various wild animals, mainly beautiful bird species flying over the water or resting in the trees.
At one point, we passed a local school where young boys were learning how to swim in the river. Our guide explained that it’s common for Gambians to learn swimming in these river branches, always in safe spots of course, away from crocodiles or hippos. It was heartwarming to see daily life unfolding so naturally on the water.
Along the riverbanks, we admired towering trees, including the majestic baobab tree, which had impressed me throughout the entire trip. These trees are not just beautiful but also deeply rooted in the culture and ecosystem of the region. This boat trip gave us a gentle, authentic glimpse of life along the Gambia River—peaceful, vibrant, and full of natural wonder.
